School Jatan Yojana is a unique and innovative scheme launched by the Chhattisgarh government to improve the quality of education and infrastructure in the state. The scheme aims to create a conducive learning environment for students by repairing, renovating, and beautifying school buildings, hostels, and ashram schools across the state.
The scheme was launched by chief minister Bhupesh Baghel in 2020 with a budget of Rs 2,033 crore. The repair work includes fixing roofs, walls, floors, doors, windows, toilets, drinking water facilities, electricity connections, furniture, etc. The beautification work includes painting walls, drawing murals, installing signboards, planting trees, etc.
The scheme also involves the participation of local communities, teachers, students, and parents in the planning and execution of the projects. The beneficiaries are selected based on the socio-economic caste census (SECC) data and verified by gram sabhas. The beneficiaries are also provided with land deeds if they are landless
The scheme has been implemented in a decentralized manner across all districts of Chhattisgarh. The progress of the scheme is monitored by district administrations and block development officers. The progress of the scheme is also updated on a real-time basis on a dashboard developed by NITI Aayog.
The scheme has shown remarkable results in a short span of time. As of July 2021, repair work of 1,918 schools has been completed while repair and painting of 13,495 buildings is underway under the scheme. In Bilaspur district alone, 1,365 school buildings are being renovated under the scheme.
The scheme has not only improved the physical infrastructure of the schools but also enhanced the learning outcomes and attendance of the students. The scheme has also created a sense of pride and ownership among the stakeholders and fostered a positive attitude towards education.
The scheme has also received appreciation and recognition from various quarters. The chief minister has been awarded the Skoch Chief Minister of the Year Award 2020 for his visionary leadership in launching the scheme. The scheme has also been praised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his Mann Ki Baat programme.
