Rectify the Flared Nostril with Rhinoplasty Surgery

rhinoplasty1

The nose is a prominent part of our face and its profile has a distinct impact on our facial appearance. Unfortunately, some people have nose features not in harmony with the rest of their faces. A nose with a wide or too large alar base- the flared nostrils, can interfere with one’s looks and create an imbalance with the rest of the nose and facial features. Naturally permanent flared nostrils at rest are a genetic defect that may be associated with medical problems like snoring or difficulty breathing. Luckily, the nostrils can be reshaped with different Rhinoplasty in Dubai

Flared nostrils look very unappealing and pronounced when one speaks, smiles, or laughs, and may have their nasal muscles in movement or at rest.

Here our discussion will be on surgical correction of static flared nostrils with rhinoplasty.

What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, commonly known as “nose job”, is a cosmetic operation of the nose carried out by a plastic surgeon. It is designed to fix issues like oversized or small noses, unrefined nose tips, or crooked noses by correcting nasal bone structure and surrounding tissues and ligaments. It may also be done to restore normal breathing.

How does Rhinoplasty correct flared nostrils?

Various rhinoplasty techniques, depending on the patient’s specific nasal anatomy, are available to correct flared nostrils. These include:

  1. Closed rhinoplasty approach for alarplasty/ alar base reduction)- Our nostrils base has rounded outer areas called the nasal ala. Flared nostrils have wide or large nasal ala. In a nostril reduction rhinoplasty surgery, the outer structure of the nose base made of flexible cartilage and fatty tissues, is corrected through a closed approach, under local anesthesia. The surgeon makes a weir cut to pull the nose skin together or downward pull the nostrils.

  2. Nostril flaring reduction with an incision made at the nostril base- By making a small incision at the nostril base and using sutures, the surgeon reduced nostril size and flaring.

  3. Open rhinoplasty to thin out the nasal muscles- The surgeon makes an incision at the base of the columella. Columella is the cartilage wall in the middle of the nose dividing the nose internally into two halves- the nostrils. Through the incision, the surgeon performs trimming of the muscles having a role in lateral pulling of the nose. This results in better support to the nasal tip and midline alignment of nostrils.

  4. Rhinoplasty to remove excess tissues- The surgeon removes a wedge of skin from the nasal sill portion, the nostril crease, or the inside-out of the nostril floor.

  5. Tip rhinoplasty to manipulate nasal tip cartilage- If flared nostrils are an outcome of excess nasal tip cartilage or improper anatomy of the nose tip, tip rhinoplasty is carried out. In this operation, the surgeon may make use of open or closed approaches to trim the nasal tip cartilage and reshape the tip to reduce extra curvature, straighten the nostrils edges, and finally reduce the nostrils flare. In some cases, cartilage grafts are used to downward move the nostril’s margins.

Open-tip rhinoplasty is a common Plastic Surgery in Abu Dhabi involves making a cut on the columella to lift the skin of the nose tip and get access and clear visibility to the underlying nasal framework. On the other hand, close-tip rhinoplasty involves making incisions only inside the nostrils.

How to care for the nose after flared nostrils correction with rhinoplasty?

Here are some aftercare instructions, the surgeon provides for the patients:

  • Avoid touching, rubbing, and blowing the nose for a minimum of 8 weeks.

  • Alleviate swelling and bruising with cold compresses.

  • Avoid putting pressure on the nose through high-impact activities and wearing glasses for a minimum of one month.

  • Keep the nostrils clean. Gently clean nostrils 4-5 times daily using Q-tips soaked in hydrogen peroxide and follow it with an application of an ointment.

  • Take painkillers and antibiotics, as prescribed.

  • Eat a healthy, fiber-rich diet and keep your body well-hydrated.

  • Sun-protect the nose when outside.
