How to Download RC Again If You Lose Your Car’s RC – That Too Sitting at Home

Government of India MINISTRY OF ROAD TRANSPORT HIGHWAYS

RC, or registration certificate, is an important document that proves that your vehicle is registered with the Regional Transport Office (RTO). It contains vital information about your vehicle, such as registration number, owner name, engine number, chassis number, etc. If you lose your RC, you may face legal trouble or fines if you drive without it.

Therefore, it is advisable to get a duplicate RC as soon as possible. In this article, we will tell you how to download RC again if you lose your car’s RC – that too sitting at home.

What is a Duplicate RC?

A duplicate RC is a copy of the original RC issued by the RTO. You can obtain a duplicate RC online or offline if your original RC is lost, damaged, torn, or used-up. However, before applying for a duplicate RC, you need to file a police complaint in the area where the RC went missing and get a copy of the FIR.

How to Apply for Duplicate RC Online?

You can apply for a duplicate RC online by following these steps:

  • Visit the Parivahan Sewa official website.
  • Click on “Online Services” and then on “Vehicle Related Services”.
  • Enter your vehicle registration number and last five digits of chassis number and click on “Proceed”.
  • Select the option of “Issue of Duplicate RC” under “Services Available”.
  • Fill up the application form and verify the owner details.
  • Pay the online service fee using debit card, credit card, net banking, or UPI. The fee varies depending on the type of vehicle.
  • A receipt will be generated, which you need to print and submit along with other supporting documents to the nearest RTO office.

What are the Documents Required for Duplicate RC?

You need to submit the following documents along with the online receipt to the RTO office:

  • Application in Form 26
  • Police FIR copy
  • Pollution under control (PUC) certificate copy
  • Valid insurance certificate copy
  • Proof of address (such as Aadhaar card, voter ID card, passport, etc.)
  • Challan clearance from traffic police and enforcement wing (for commercial vehicles)
  • Tax clearance from accounts department (for commercial vehicles)
  • Attested copy of PAN card or Form 60 and Form 61 (as applicable)
  • Chassis and engine pencil print
  • Signature identification of owner
  • Affidavit stating that RC is lost and has not been impounded

How to Download RC from DigiLocker or mParivahan?

You can also download the digital copy of your RC from DigiLocker or mParivahan app. These are government-approved platforms that store your vehicle documents electronically. You can access them anytime and anywhere using your mobile phone. To download RC from DigiLocker or mParivahan, follow these steps:

  • Download DigiLocker or mParivahan app from Google Play Store or App Store.
  • Sign up using your Aadhaar number and OTP verification.

  • You can save it as a PDF file or print it if needed.

How to Convert RC Book to RC Smart Card?

If you have an old paper-based RC book, you can convert it to a smart card-based RC. A smart card is a plastic card that has a chip embedded in it. It stores all the information about your vehicle digitally and securely. To convert your RC book to a smart card, you need to contact the superintendent of traffic and submit the following documents:

  • A copy of the insurance policy
  • PUC certificate copy
  • Required fee payment
  • First RC book

You can get your smart card within a week after submitting the documents to the RTO.

How to Add Your Mobile Number Before Downloading RC

Before you can download your RC online, you need to add your mobile number to the vehicle registration details. This is necessary for the OTP verification process and for receiving updates on your application status. To add your mobile number, you need to follow these steps:

  • Go to the Parivahan Sewa website and click on “Online Services” and then on “Vehicle Related Services”.
  • Enter your vehicle registration number and last five digits of chassis number and click on “Proceed”.
  • Select the option of “Services” from the menu bar and then scroll down to the “Additional Services” section.
  • Click on the option of “Update Mobile Number” and fill up the required details, such as vehicle registration number, engine number, registration date, registration valid up to date, etc. You can find these details on your RC.
  • Click on the option of “Show Details” and enter your Aadhaar number, name as per Aadhaar, and mobile number linked with Aadhaar in the respective slots.
  • Click on “Verify” and then you will see your vehicle details below.
  • There you will find the option of “Update Mobile Number”. Click on it and enter the mobile number that you want to add or update.
  • You will receive an OTP on your new mobile number. Enter it and click on “Submit”.
  • You will get a confirmation message that your mobile number has been updated successfully.

This way, you can add or update your mobile number linked with your Aadhaar number and vehicle registration details. To download your RC, you need to go through the OTP verification process again, so make sure you use the same mobile number that you have updated. After completing all the processes, you will get your RC in PDF format. You can download it or print it from the print option. The digital RC will be exactly the same as the one issued by the government of India. You can show it to avoid any penalty or challan. The digital RC is completely valid.

However, if you do not receive your RC by post within the stipulated time, you may have to visit the post office yourself and inquire about it. But in any case, if your RC does not arrive, you will be notified about the problem through a message. You should take good care of this document. Be careful not to lose it. If you lose it, you have to inform the nearest police station. Remember not to drive your vehicle on national highways or any main roads without this document.

Conclusion

Losing your car’s RC can be a hassle, but you can easily get a duplicate one online or offline. You just need to file a police complaint, pay the fee, and submit the documents to the RTO. You can also download the digital copy of your RC from DigiLocker or mParivahan app. Alternatively, you can convert your paper-based RC book to a smart card-based one for more convenience and security. We hope this article helped you understand how to download RC again if you lose your car’s RC – that too sitting at home.
