Saur Sujala Yojana

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the year 2016 launched the Saur Sujala Yojana in Chhattisgarh. This yojana was introduced with the aim of providing solar powered irrigation pumps to farmers at a subsidized price

Solar irrigation pumps with 3HP and 5HP capacities worth Rs 3.5 lakh and Rs 4.5 lakh, respectively, would be supplied to farmers under the scheme by March 31, 2019. The pumps would be provided to the beneficiaries at a reduced cost.

N Baijendra Kumar, the then assistant chief secretary for energy in Chhattisgarh, stated that the rollout of the program in the following two years would benefit 51,000 farmers in the state. According to him, the program would be prioritized in places where electricity has not yet been connected.

The Chhattisgarh government’s implementation of the programs was praised by the prime minister. “The effect of the foundation that Chhattisgarh is laying (for the growth) and the schemes it is designing and implementing for the welfare of poor people will remain for the century,” added Modi.

An official from the CREDA department stated that 9143 farmers in the district have benefited from the program in this regard. Farmers are no longer required to rely on rainfall. Utilizing the program, farmers are now producing more than two crops. After digging tubewells, Banarasi Mehta, a farmer in the Balrampur district’s Chandanpur hamlet, constructed a solar pump for irrigation on 1.5 acres of arable land in the Ramchandrapur development block.

Green vegetables and paddy are now being grown in the area. His income rose as a result of this. In the years 2023–2024, farmer Sukumar of the Krishna Nagar village in the Balrampur development block erected a solar pump with a capacity of 3 HP. He owns roughly 1.5 acres of land for farming. He was unable to transplant paddy this year due to the delay in the rains. But the installation of a solar pump allowed for the timely transplant of the paddy. In addition to paddy, he also grows green vegetables.
The Saur Sujala Yojana assisted farmers in easily producing their Kharif and Rabi crops as well as green vegetables. Due to the resolution of the water issue, all forms of agricultural, vegetable production, and other activities are proceeding without incident. Farmers are earning more money.  According to a CREDA department source, the district has currently met its goal of constructing 1500 pumps as part of the program.
