Ghoomer Movie Review: A Moving and Inspiring Sports Drama

A Moving and Inspiring Sports Drama

Ghoomer is a sports drama film directed by R. Balki and starring Abhishek Bachchan and Saiyami Kher in the lead roles. The film is based on the true story of Károly Takács, a Hungarian shooter who won two Olympic gold medals with his left hand after losing his right hand in an accident. The film follows the journey of Anina Dixit (Saiyami Kher), a talented batswoman who loses her right arm in a freak accident and tries to make a comeback as a spinner with the help of Padam Singh Sodhi aka Paddy (Abhishek Bachchan), a former cricketer turned alcoholic coach.

The Plot

The film begins with Anina Dixit, a rising star of the Indian women’s cricket team, who is about to make her international debut as a batsman. She is confident, ambitious, and passionate about the game. She has the support of her grandmother (Shabana Azmi), who is also a cricket expert and a fan of Roger Federer. However, on the eve of her big day, Anina meets with a tragic accident that results in the amputation of her right arm. This shatters her dreams and leaves her depressed and suicidal.

Meanwhile, Padam Singh Sodhi, or Paddy, is a former cricketer who played only one Test match for India before injuring his shoulder and being dropped from the team. He is now a bitter and lonely man who lives in a secluded house and drowns his sorrows in alcohol. He has no friends or family, except for his loyal servant (Sivendra Singh Dungarpur).

One day, Anina’s grandmother visits Paddy and requests him to train Anina as a bowler. She believes that Anina has the potential to become a one-handed spinner and make history. Paddy initially refuses, but later agrees after seeing Anina’s determination and desperation. He decides to take up the challenge as a way of redeeming himself and finding a purpose in life.

Thus begins the unlikely partnership between Anina and Paddy, who are both broken and damaged in their own ways. They have to overcome their physical and emotional limitations, as well as their personal conflicts, to achieve their common goal. Along the way, they also encounter various obstacles and oppositions from the cricket establishment, the media, and their own inner demons.

Will Anina be able to make a successful comeback as a spinner? Will Paddy be able to overcome his past and find happiness? Will they be able to inspire each other and millions of others with their courage and resilience? These are some of the questions that Ghoomer tries to answer in its gripping and uplifting narrative.

The Performances

The film boasts of some stellar performances from its lead actors, as well as its supporting cast. Abhishek Bachchan delivers one of his best performances of his career as Paddy, the tormented coach who undergoes a transformation from a cynical drunkard to a caring mentor. He portrays the character’s anger, pain, humor, and vulnerability with finesse and conviction. He also shares a great chemistry with Saiyami Kher, who plays Anina, the spirited player who refuses to give up on her dreams. Saiyami Kher is equally impressive as Anina, who displays remarkable strength and grace in the face of adversity. She also looks convincing as a cricketer, both as a batsman and as a bowler.

The supporting cast also does justice to their roles, especially Shabana Azmi as Anina’s grandmother, who is the pillar of strength of the movie.

The Technical Aspects

The film is also impressive in its technical aspects, such as cinematography, editing, music, and sound. The film is shot by Vishal Sinha, who captures the beauty and the grit of the cricket grounds, as well as the emotions and expressions of the characters. The film is edited by Nipun Ashok Gupta, who keeps the pace and the rhythm of the film smooth and engaging. The film’s music is composed by Amit Trivedi, who creates a soulful and stirring soundtrack that complements the mood and the theme of the film. The film’s sound design is done by Resul Pookutty, who creates a realistic and immersive sound environment that enhances the impact of the film.
