Everything You Wanted to Know About Hornady Bore Driver ELD-X Muzzlelo

Hornady Bore Driver ELD X

Time was when everyone in the muzzleloader market went afield with nothing but a sidelock, some patched round balls, and a few prayers.

Today muzzleloader hunters are pushing the envelope of the reasonable with advanced inline ignition systems, high-performance black powder substitutes, modern optics, and of course, advanced spitzer bullets, like Hornady Bore Driver ELD-X bullets.

On that note, shooting spitzer bullets like these is just one way you can improve your odds when you take a front stuffer into the field. Here’s what you need to know about them.

Easy Loading

You ever had to put your back into loading a patched round ball down a badly fouled barrel? Well, say goodbye to that. Modern spitzer bullets like Hornady Bore Driver ELD-X bullets are expressly designed to be easier to load.

Hornady Bore Driver ELD-X bullets are designed without a sabot, making loading easier, though they do have a performance-boosting base (see below).

This lack of a sabot decreases overall diameter and doesn’t require you to squeeze the synthetic sabot down the chokehold of a barrel. Closer diameter alignment with the bore diameter (.499 for .50 cal ELD-X bullets) ensures optimal performance without the sabot, anyway.

Designed for Maximum Power

Bore Driver ELD-X bullets are made with a polymer base that has a post that fits into the bottom of the bullet.

This polymer base (and post) swells when the propellant ignites, ensuring better torque engagement inside the bullet. Moreover, the base has polymer “petals” that grip the bullet’s boat-tail and center it within the bore.

This polymer base also has a skirt that expands when the propellant charge deflagrates, pressing into the rifling, ensuring minimal loss of leaked gasses, maximizing energy potential behind the bullet, for greater muzzle velocities, overall power, and superior spin-stability, for better accuracy.

And Energy Transfer

These muzzleloader bullets are designed for optimal mass retention and energy transfer on impact, giving them maximum ability to ethically dispatch your target quarry.

They’re made with an “interlock ring” and copper jackets, which sort of work like a bonded bullet; this helps the bullet retain weight on impact. Rather than allowing the jacket to peel away and detach from the core, the bullet stays together, affording optimal penetration.

That said, Hornady Bore Driver ELD-X bullets are also engineered for rapid, consistent expansion and energy transfer. They’re made with polymer tips that drive into the core like a wedge on impact, causing rapid, devastating expansion, a larger wound channel, and fast energy transfer for ethical dispatches.

Exceptional Stability

Due to the nearly full-bore sizing of these bullets, and the polymer bases, they offer better spin-stability than competing spitzer bullets.

Which is another consideration; if you’ve never taken spitzer bullets into the field, do it this season. They offer far better ballistic performance than round balls, superior penetration, and significantly better accuracy, especially at ranges in excess of 100 yards.

To be frank, patched round balls may hold the reins of tradition, and that’s how lots of us learned to shoot muzzleloaders, but when it comes to performance, they’re inferior to jacketed spitzer bullets in nearly every way.
