PM Narendra Modi Launches Vishwakarma Scheme for Artisans and Craftspeople

On the eve of ‘Vishwakarma Jayanati’, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched the ‘PM Vishwakarma Scheme to provide holistic support to traditional artisans and craftspeople. While addressing the nation on India’s 77th Independence Day from the ramparts of the Red Fort, PM Modi announced that his government would soon introduce a new scheme to support skilled artisans and craftsmen associated with traditional trades.

On his 73rd birthday, which was on September 17, PM Modi launched Vishwarkama Scheme along with the Toolkit Booklet and 18 post tickets at the India International Convention and Expo Centre in Dwarka.

PM Vishwakarma Scheme 2023 in Detail

The full name of PM Vishwakarma Scheme is PM Vishwakarma Kaushal Samman Scheme. It is also known by the name of “PM Vikash Scheme’. Under the scheme, all artisans and craftspeople associated with traditional trades will receive Rs. 15, 000 to buy toolkit. In addition, beneficiaries will get training from the government. Each of these beneficiaries will receive Rs. 500 on a daily basis during training. This scheme will increase earning and reduce the rate of unemployment among the artisans and craftspeople.

Objectives of PM Vishwakarma Scheme 2023

The main objective of PM Vishwakarma Scheme 2023 is to provide financial support to artisans and craftspeople associated with traditional trades so that they can reach their products and services to the right place. Prospective beneficiaries will receive an amount of Rs. 15, 000 to buy toolkits through this scheme. Moreover, each beneficiary will obtain collateral-free loan up to Rs. 3 lakh in two tranches (Rs 1 lakh in 1st and Rs 2 lakh in 2nd tranche respectively) at the rate of only 5%. The purpose of the scheme is to help these artisans and craftsmen improve their financial wellbeing.

The Union Government will spend Rs. 13, 000 crore to provide full funding to the scheme.

PM Vishwakarma Scheme 2023: Who Will Get Benefits

The PM Vishwakarma Scheme will benefit artisans and craftspeople in rural and urban areas across the country. Under this scheme, 18 traditional trades have been initially shortlisted:

Ø  Barber

Ø  Basket/mat/broom maker/Coil weaver

Ø  Blacksmith

Ø  Boat maker

Ø  Carpenter

Ø  Cobbler

Ø  Doll and toy maker

Ø  Fishing net maker

Ø  Garland maker

Ø  Goldsmith

Ø  Hammer and toolkit maker

Ø  Locksmith  

Ø  Mason

Ø  Sculptor

Ø  Stone breaker

Ø  Tailor

Ø  Washermaen

Key Features of PM Vishwakarma Scheme

Ø  Under the PM Vishwakarma scheme, potential beneficiaries will be able to register their names free of charge via common service centres, using the official biometric-based portal of PM Vishwakarma.  

Ø  Under the scheme, financial support will be granted to artisans and craftspeople in rural and urban areas across India.

Ø  Primarily, 18 traditional trades have been covered under the scheme. The names of the chosen trades have been mentioned above.

Ø  In the first year within the launch of the scheme, five lakh families will be benefitted and a total of 30 lakh families will be benefitted from 24-28.

Ø  The scheme will focus on improving the quality as well as the reach of products and services, with a view to connect artisans and craftspeople to the domestic and international value chains.

Ø  The beneficiaries of the PM Vishwakarma Scheme will be recognized through a PM Vishwakarma certificate and ID card, as well as skill improvement covering both primary and advanced training.

Ø  The beneficiaries will be granted a toolkit incentive of Rs. 15, 000 and collateral-free financial support up to Rs 3 Lakh (Rs 1 lakh in first tranche and Rs. 2 lakh in second tranche) at a petty interest of 5%, incentives for marketing support and digital transactions.

Eligibility for PM Vishwakarma Scheme

Ø  Applicants must be an Indian citizen.

Ø  A total of 140 sects belonging to the community of artisans and craftspeople will be eligible to apply.

Ø  All artisans and craftspeople of India will be covered under the scheme.

Ø  Government employees will not be eligible to apply for the scheme.

Ø  Beneficiaries of other state government or central government scheme will not be eligible to apply.

Ø  Applicants must have their bank passbook linked to their Adhaar Card.

Ø  Only one member from a family will be eligible to apply for the scheme.

Ø  The ‘Home’ page will open on the screen.

Ø  Click on ‘How to Register’ option on ‘Home’ page.Ø  A new page will open on the screen. You have to provide the required information for registration. Read each instruction carefully before filling in.
