What is Godhan Nyay Yojana?

Godhan Nyay Yojana is a scheme launched by the Chhattisgarh government led by Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel on July 21, 2020, on the occasion of Hareli, the first festival of the state. The main objective of this scheme is to procure cow dung from farmers and cattle owners at the rate of Rs. 2 per kg and use it to produce vermicompost and other products, which are then sold to farmers as organic manure at Rs. 8 per kg. The scheme aims to achieve multiple benefits such as:

  • Providing financial support to farmers and cattle owners for their cow dung
  • Promoting organic farming and reducing the use of chemical fertilizers
  • Generating employment opportunities for rural women and youth through self-help groups
  • Protecting cows and preventing their abandonment and slaughter
  • Improving soil health and fertility
  • Reducing air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions from cow dung burning
  • Enhancing rural economy and livelihoods

How does Godhan Nyay Yojana work?

The Godhan Nyay Yojana works through a network of gauthans, which are community cow shelters established under the Suraji Gaon Yojana, another flagship scheme of the Chhattisgarh government. The gauthans provide shelter, fodder and water to stray and unproductive cows, as well as serve as centres for cow dung procurement, processing and marketing. The gauthans are managed by village-level committees and women self-help groups.

The process of Godhan Nyay Yojana is as follows:

  • Farmers and cattle owners bring their cow dung to the nearest gauthan and sell it at Rs. 2 per kg. They receive payment through direct bank transfer within 24 hours.
  • The cow dung is collected and stored in pits or heaps in the gauthan. It is then converted into vermicompost or other products such as biogas, biopesticides, phenyl etc. by using various techniques such as vermicomposting, anaerobic digestion etc.
  • The vermicompost or other products are packed and branded under the name of Godhan Ark or Godhan Amrit. They are then sold to farmers or other customers at Rs. 8 per kg or as per market rates.
  • The revenue generated from the sale of vermicompost or other products is shared among the gauthan committee, the women self-help group and the state government in the ratio of 40:40:20.

What are the achievements of Godhan Nyay Yojana?

The Godhan Nyay Yojana has been a huge success since its launch in July 2020. Some of the achievements of this scheme are:
