Adipic acid is a white, odorless crystalline solid that is slightly soluble in water and highly soluble in ethanol. Adipic acid is also known as hexanedioic acid, adipinic acid, and 1,4-butanedicarboxylic acid. It’s used in the manufacture of nylon, plasticizers, urethanes, adhesives, and food additives. In food, it’s used as an acidifier, buffer, gelling aid, and sequestrant. It’s commonly added to bottled drinks to give them a fizzy quality, and it can also add tart flavor to fruit juice and gelatin. In powdered food and drink mixes, it’s used to provide a sweet flavor.
