Assam government has achieved a remarkable feat by allotting 300,000 houses to citizens in the state under the Prime Minister Awas Yojana (Grameen) scheme in a single day. The scheme aims to provide affordable housing to the rural poor and ensure that every household has a pucca house with basic amenities by 2022.
Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who launched the Griha Pravesh programme on Thursday, said that the state government has fulfilled the dream of lakhs of people who were living in kutcha houses or were homeless. He said that the beneficiaries were selected based on the socio-economic caste census (SECC) and were provided an amount of Rs 1.30 lakh each over three installments through their bank accounts as per the provisions of the scheme.
Sarma also said that the state government has taken measures to ensure that the landless population of the state are also able to enjoy the benefits of the scheme by allotting them land. He said that 19,10,823 houses have been approved under the scheme, out of which 12,43,584 houses have already been constructed, and another 600,000 houses will be completed by February 2024.
The chief minister also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his vision and commitment to provide housing for all. He said that Assam is one of the leading states in implementing the PM Awas Yojana (Grameen) scheme and has received several awards and recognitions for its performance.
The PM Awas Yojana (Grameen) scheme is a flagship programme of the central government that was launched in 2015 with an aim to provide pucca houses with basic amenities such as water supply, sanitation, electricity, and cooking gas to all eligible rural households by 2022.
