Eklingji Temple in Udaipur

Located about 22 kilometers from Udaipur, the Eklingji Temple is one of Rajasthan’s most revered religious and architectural landmarks. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this ancient temple has stood as a symbol of spiritual devotion and architectural grandeur for centuries. Nestled amidst the picturesque Aravalli Hills, it is a must-visit destination for history buffs, pilgrims, and art enthusiasts.

The Eklingji Temple, also known as Kailashpuri, was originally built in 734 AD by Bappa Rawal, the founder of the Mewar dynasty. Over time, it underwent renovations by successive rulers, showcasing a blend of architectural styles. The temple complex houses 108 intricately carved shrines, with the main shrine dedicated to Eklingji, a form of Lord Shiva worshipped as the ruling deity of Mewar.

The primary deity is represented by a striking four-faced Shiva lingam made of black marble. Each face symbolizes a different aspect of Lord Shiva: Surya (sun) facing east, Brahma (creator) facing west, Vishnu (preserver) facing north, and Rudra (destroyer) facing south. This unique representation signifies the deity’s omnipresence and power.

The temple’s architecture is a fine example of the Nagara style, with its towering shikhara (spire), intricately carved pillars, and ornate ceilings. The sculptures of dancers, musicians, and deities adorning the temple walls reflect the exquisite craftsmanship of the bygone era. The temple also features a silver door and a beautifully designed mandap (pillared hall), adding to its grandeur.

Apart from its architectural splendor, the Eklingji Temple holds immense religious significance. It is an important pilgrimage site, especially during Maha Shivaratri, when devotees flock in large numbers to seek blessings. The temple is also associated with the royal family of Mewar, who regard Lord Eklingji as the ruler of the region, with the king serving as His deputy.

Surrounded by serene water tanks, including the Kailash Kund, the temple exudes an aura of tranquility. Visitors often find themselves enchanted by the spiritual ambiance and the scenic beauty of the surroundings.

Whether you seek spiritual solace, historical insight, or architectural inspiration, the Eklingji Temple in Udaipur offers a profound experience. Its timeless charm continues to captivate all who visit, making it a jewel in the cultural heritage of Rajasthan.
