In the bustling cities of Kolkata and Pune, a quiet revolution is taking place, led by the dedicated team at Spherule Foundation. Amidst the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, which disproportionately affected women, the foundation has launched a transformative skill development project aimed at uplifting underprivileged women and empowering them to achieve financial independence.
The project began with a thorough need analysis of the communities in Bidhannagar, Kolkata, and various wards in Pune. The goal was clear: to equip women with the skills necessary to improve their lives and become self-reliant. The foundation’s team, driven by a deep commitment to social change, identified several key areas where training could make a significant impact.
In Kolkata, the project focused on the Bidhannagar community, while in Pune, it targeted the Kothrud, Parvati Payatha, and Janata Vasahat communities. The training programs were designed to be comprehensive, covering a range of livelihood skills tailored to the needs and interests of the women in these areas.
One of the most popular training programs was in elderly and child care. Women learned essential skills such as personal care, hygiene, daily tasks, and basic healthcare, including weight, blood pressure, and sugar level checks. This training not only prepared them for potential employment but also equipped them with valuable knowledge to care for their own families.
Another sought-after program was in body massage techniques. Women were trained in various types of massages, including newborn massage, pre and post-pregnancy massages, and general massage techniques. This skill opened up new avenues for employment in spas and wellness centers, as well as opportunities to start their own businesses.
The beautician training program was also a hit, teaching women grooming, makeup, and haircut skills. This training empowered them to work in beauty salons or offer services from their homes, providing a steady source of income.
Tailoring classes were equally popular, where women learned cutting, dress designing, stitching, and making uniforms and aprons. This skill not only provided immediate employment opportunities but also allowed women to start their own tailoring businesses.
Cooking classes focused on healthy cooking, introducing superfoods, and teaching low-calorie, high-nutrition recipes. Women also learned how to prepare special meals for children and make dabba (lunchbox) meals, which they could sell to working professionals.
The project also included training in making sanitary napkins, covering everything from identifying types and quality testing to packaging and managing the supply chain. This training not only provided employment but also addressed a critical need for affordable sanitary products in the community.
In addition to these livelihood skills, the project emphasized the importance of life skills. Women were taught soft skills such as communication and professionalism, as well as basic internet and mobile skills. They learned how to use WhatsApp, YouTube, and video calls for professional purposes, which was particularly useful for those in elderly or child care.
Financial literacy was another crucial component of the training. Women learned how to manage their money, create family budgets, and save for the future. They were encouraged to open bank accounts and make small investments, which helped them secure their financial independence.
The project was managed by a dedicated team, including a Project Manager, Centre Manager, Finance Officer, and Instructors for Livelihood Skills. Each member played a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation and success of the project.
The impact of the project was profound. Women who had lost their jobs during the pandemic found new opportunities and became financially independent. They were motivated to take up jobs or start their own businesses, becoming role models in their communities. The project not only enhanced their awareness and confidence but also brought about a positive change in their social status.
