Ex-India Captain Thinks Harmanpreet Kaur’s Behaviour in Bangladesh Match Was Boorish

Indian Women’s Cricket Team captain Harmanpreet Kaur has been severely criticized for her bad behaviour in the third ODI match with Bangladesh.

Former Indian captain Shantha Rangaswamy told yesterday that Harmanpreet should not have behaved roughly as it had soiled the image of an Indian skipper.

Harmanpreet has received a two-match suspension for her boorish outburst in Dhaka last week by shattering stumps after being given an LBW verdict. She even went further to criticise match officials publicly.

When speaking with PTI, Shantha condemned Harmanpreet’s behaviour by saying it was deplorable and did not befit the image of an Indian captain. If she had stopped after her dismissal (it would still be acceptable to some) but what she did at the presentation was not good for the game”, Shantha added. She thinks Harmanpreet went overboard.

According to Shantha, her behaviour was a blot on all the good works done by the boards of the two countries. Though she thinks Harmanpreet is the numero uno batter in the Indian team, still her behaviour is unacceptable. She continued saying that India is a heavyweight in the subcontinent and needs support from other countries.

Shantha said that Harmanpreet was India’s brand ambassador in Bangladesh and should not have behaved in such a way.

What Happened?

The skipper tried to sweep a Nahida Akter delivery but was adjudged LBW. She claimed of having got a bottom edge and shattered the stamps in a fit of rage before returning to the pavilion.

Harman did not stop there and criticized the match umpire at the post-match presentation ceremony. She was still fuming and called the level of umpiring “pathetic”. She even went further to ask the umpires to be summoned for joining the teams for the trophy presentation ceremony. She sounded sarcastic, which is least expected of a team captain.

Bangladesh Captain’s Reaction

Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana walked away with her team in a protest against Harmanpreet’s comment and urged the Indian skipper to learn some “manners”.

Even Indian cricket fans have not spared Harmanpreet as they think such unsportsmanlike behaviour tarnishes India’s image outside. Though a few went soft on her; most the Indian cricket lovers have criticized her in the harshest tone.
