From Corporate to Startup Success: Debashish Majumder and ‘Momomia’

Untitled1 1

Debashish Majumder Born into a lower-middle-class Bengali family, he started his career with a salary of Rs 1800 per month. Then he faced a major setback when he decided to start his own business. He had to sell momos to pay back the loans, which helped his business grow. Today, he owns the food startup Momomia, with over 100 locations nationwide and a monthly income exceeding Rs 2 crore.

Inspiration

Debashish drew inspiration from his grandfather, who frequently emphasized the importance of building a name rather than just earning money, as a good reputation endures. This advice left a lasting impression on Debashish, fueling his dream of becoming a successful businessman at a young age. After completing college, he began his career at a private bank with a modest monthly salary of Rs. 1800.

Launching startups

Debashish opened his first business, an ice cream shop, while he was employed at the bank. However, the operation was a failure, costing him about Rs 8 lakh. Despite this obstacle, he never wavered in his will, and his ambition to own his own company kept him going. He decided to leave his work in 2018 and invest Rs 3.5 lakh to launch Momomia, which had just three staff members at first.

Momomia’s success

After his ice cream shop failed, Debashish faced difficult financial times and was motivated to launch Momomia. Following his overwhelmingly positive experience with momos at a Guwahati eatery, he made the business decision to create his own momos outlet. In 2018, he used borrowed cash of Rs 3.5 lakh to open the first Momomia store in Guwahati. The company took off in less than a year, which prompted the opening of more Momomia stores.

From its humble beginnings with just three workers, the company has grown to employ 400 people. The company now has over 100 outlets and generates Rs 25 crore in revenue annually.
