How to Prepare for IELTS? The 4-Step Plan

IELTS preparation course

Preparing for IELTS usually starts when you find out that you need a certain IELTS score for your visa or university application. Many students then spend months stressing and preparing.

But if you think about it, your IELTS preparation started several years ago, when you started learning English. It’s nice to feel like you’re already on the right track. IELTS institute in lahore is designed to test your English level accurately, so in an ideal world, IELTS preparation would only mean improving your English. Unfortunately, it’s not that simple. Here’s my 4-step plan to help you prepare for the IELTS test.

Step 1: Know where you are

If you don’t know your current level of English in terms of the IELTS scale, you don’t know what you need to do to reach your goal. The first step in your IELTS preparation should therefore be to test your current level. There are many tests on the market, but the easiest way to check your IELTS score is to take the EF SET test . This is a 1-hour test, which will give you an EFSET score as well as an equivalent IELTS score for reading and listening. Unless your speaking skills are completely different from your writing level, you now know where you stand.

Step 2: Improve your English

You knew this was going to be part of the plan, right? Improve your English by using online tools, books, or taking classes. You should work on all aspects of your English: reading, listening, writing, and speaking. You can use special IELTS tools, but you don’t have to at this stage of preparation. Any English learning techniques that you find interesting can be effective in preparing for IELTS. For example:

Read in English about topics that interest you, forcing yourself to look up the meaning of every word you don’t understand. Newspapers and magazines are good places to build your vocabulary. Reading will help you write better, but practice writing too. Don’t limit yourself to one writing style. Keeping a diary in English, writing short stories, and practicing essays are all good practices. Edit your own work or find someone to proofread it with you.

Watch movies or listen to the radio in English. Replay the sequences you missed until you understand them.

Step 3: Learn all about the IELTS test format

Improving your English is not enough to get a great IELTS score. A native English speaker taking the IELTS will not get a perfect score if they don’t study for the test itself. You need to know how the test scoring works, how much text is required for each answer, and when points are subtracted or added. There may be small essentials like:

Step 4: Test yourself again

When you feel that you have improved your English and are comfortable with the IELTS test, there is one more step before you register for the exam. Test yourself again. If you took the Plus in Step 1, take it again to see how much you have improved. If you can take an IELTS speaking or writing test, do that too. It doesn’t matter which one you choose, but don’t skip this step. It’s the only way to know if you are willing to spend the money to take the official exam. There is no point in registering for IELTS if you are not prepared to get the score you want…
