Furthermore, after 1980, the government increased the pension amount to Rs 300 for living freedom fighters and Rs 200 for the widows of deceased freedom fighters, with an additional Rs 50 per month for each unmarried daughter, up to a maximum limit of Rs 300 per month. Continuation Of Pension Till 2025-26

In a move to commemorate the sacrifices made by freedom fighters, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the continuation of the Swatantrata Sainik Samman Yojana for the financial year 2021-22 to 2025-26. 

This decision was made during Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, and a budget of Rs 3274.87 crore has been allocated for the implementation of this scheme. Presently, 23566 beneficiaries across the country are covered under the program. Additionally, dearness relief on the pension amount has been provided since August 15, 2016.

Objective Of Swatantrata Sainik Samman Yojana

The primary objective of the Swatantrata Sainik Samman Yojana is to honor and acknowledge the invaluable contribution of freedom fighters in India’s struggle for independence. The scheme provides a monthly pension to freedom fighters, enabling them to lead a life of dignity and self-respect.

Eligible Dependents Under Swatantrata Sainik Samman Yojana

The following family members are considered eligible dependents under the Swatantrata Sainik Samman Yojana:

  • Mother

  • Widower/widow (if not remarried)
  • Daughters

It’s important to note that only one eligible dependent can receive a pension. In cases with multiple eligible dependents, the sequence of eligibility is as follows: widower/widow, unmarried daughter, mother, and father.

Duration Of Pension Under the Scheme

  • The pension is granted for the lifetime of the recipient.
  • Unmarried daughters will continue to receive a pension until they get married.
  • If the pensioner passes away, their heirs are not automatically eligible for the pension. They must reapply with proof of eligibility, and their applications will be evaluated in accordance with the pension scheme.

Rules Of Permit Drawl Of Pension

The Swatantrata Sainik Samman pension can be drawn through various methods, including:

  • In the form of treasury or sub-treasury
  • By money order, provided that the monthly pension does not exceed Rs 250. A money order commission will be charged if the pension amount exceeds Rs 250.

Swatantrata Sainik Samman Yojana Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Swatantrata Sainik Samman Yojana, individuals must meet specific criteria, which include:

  • Having served a minimum of 6 months of imprisonment in a mainland jail before India gained independence.
  • Ex-INA personnel are eligible for the pension if they have been imprisoned or detained outside India.
  • The minimum period of actual imprisonment is 3 months for women and SC/ST freedom fighters.
  • Individuals who remained underground for more than 6 months due to an arrest warrant or detention order being issued.
  • A person interned in their home or externed from their district for a period of 6 months or more.
  • Individuals whose property was confiscated or attached and sold due to their participation in the freedom struggle.
  • Those who have become permanently incapacitated during firing or lathi charge.
  • Individuals who lost their job and means of livelihood due to participation in the national movement.
  • The family of a martyr is also eligible.
