Thrifty Fashion Tips: How to Save Money and Stay Stylish

We all love adding to our wardrobes, but this is often a costly expense. Recently, we’ve seen more and more shoppers try to find ways to update their fashion choices while also trying to reduce the cost. Here are four money-savvy ways that thrifty fashionistas can update their style.

Shop on Pre-Loved Platforms

Platforms selling pre-loved items are well and truly on the rise. The likes of Vinted, Depop and even eBay give consumers a way to earn money from clothes they no longer need. On the flip side, those on the hunt for new clothes can pick up items for drastically lower prices.

It’s not just old clothes that can be found on these types of platforms either. You can also find unworn items with their original tags and packaging at a far reduced price compared to products found in store.

Use filters to search by new or new without tags. Unlike shops, you can also negotiate prices with sellers to try and secure yourself an even better deal. Also, try shopping at peak times such as Christmas when unwanted gifts are being listed.

While shopping for pre-owned items will save you money, it’s also seen as a more environmentally friendly choice compared with purchasing brand new items.

Go Thriftshopping

Thrifting was once looked down upon, but nowadays it’s seen as on trend to buy items from thrift stores. This is partly due to the emergence of retro clothing as a fashion trend. While brands release retro-inspired clothing lines, there is nothing better than picking up an authentic item from twenty or thirty years ago.

To pick up the best items, you’ll need to perfect the art of thrift shopping. Knowing where to shop and how to shop can be quite a stressful task as most thrift stores aren’t as neatly laid out compared to proper stores.

You’ll first need patience to succeed at thrift shopping. Don’t expect to find exactly what you’re looking for in the first store you visit. Also, go in armed with a list and check all sections of the store.

Finding a second-hand hidden gem can be time consuming. But from jewellery to footwear, don’t underestimate the thrill of picking up a vintage item in great condition at a fraction of the price.

Avoid Big Name Brands

The world of fashion is dominated by global brands and unsurprisingly these brands often sell the most desirable fashion products. But this also allows them to charge higher prices due to the reach of their brand and marketing.

A good way to save money is by exploring the abundance of small, up-and-coming fashion brands. These brands will usually charge lower prices but many of them also don’t compromise on quality.

It can also be rewarding to support small startups as opposed to adding to the already enormous profits of global brands. Another point to consider is the fact that buying from lesser-known brands makes your style more unique and quirkier. Purchasing from world-famous brands increases the chances of bumping into someone wearing the exact same outfit as you.

Shop Seasonal Items When Out of Season

Price is dependent upon demand, and this is something you can take advantage of when shopping for new clothes. It goes without saying that the demand for warmer clothes drops in summer with the same being said for summer clothes during the winter.

In between picking up items that you currently need, shop for out-of-season products that you’ll need further down the line. For example, try searching online for a men’s hoodie sale in July or for women’s bikinis in December; both of these items should be discounted at these times due to lower consumer demand.

You may also want to scour clearance sections in stores where out-of-season stock is being sold off at heavily reduced prices.
