Urgent Dialogue Needed on Media-Government Relationship Dynamics

Untitled1 6

The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has raised concerns regarding the deteriorating relationship between the media and the government. In a statement issued on July 22, MCK highlighted issues surrounding the coverage of public demonstrations, noting a rise in accusations from both sides that have intensified tensions.

This ongoing conflict has led to widespread anxiety and confusion among the public, stemming from what initially began as concerns over perceived bias in media coverage during the 2022 general election. MCK described the situation as escalating into a significant conflict characterized by threats, blame games, coercion, and a growing divide between the two parties.

The council pointed out that despite the government employing an unprecedented number of communications and media advisers, the media has expressed frustration over the lack of clear narratives from the state and an overload of government viewpoints. MCK emphasized the urgent need to find common ground and foster a cooperative partnership between the government and the media for the benefit of all.
